| Pitching wedge | 142 | 84 |
These are averages across PGA Tour players measured by Trackman launch monitors at tour events. They are a reference point, not a target: a tour player swings a 7-iron about as fast as many club golfers swing a driver.
How the estimate works
club estimate = your 7-iron carry × (tour carry of that club ÷ tour 7-iron carry)
Worked example: a golfer who carries a 7-iron 150 yards gets about 130 yards with a 9-iron, 170 with a 5-iron and 240 with a driver. The tour ratios keep the gaps proportional, but slower swings lose more distance with long, low-lofted clubs than with short irons. If your 5-iron and 7-iron fly almost the same distance, that is normal at lower speeds, and a hybrid or a 7-wood often fills the gap better than a long iron.
How to find your real distances
Hit ten balls with each club on a launch monitor, or to a range with measured targets, and take the average carry of your solid shots, leaving out the worst two. Write the numbers into the chart above, print it, and keep it in your bag. With 14 clubs allowed under Rule 4.1b, look for even gaps of about 10 to 15 yards and no two clubs that do the same job.
Frequently asked questions
How far should I hit my 7 iron?
There is no single right number: it depends on swing speed and the loft of your set. Trackman's PGA Tour average is 176 yards of carry at about 92 mph club speed. Most recreational men carry a 7-iron somewhere between 120 and 160 yards. What matters is knowing your own number and the gaps around it.
How far does the average PGA Tour player hit a driver?
About 282 yards of carry at 115 mph club speed, according to Trackman's 2023 PGA Tour averages, before the ball rolls out.
How many yards between each iron?
On tour the gap is about 10 to 12 yards per iron, which matches the 3 to 4 degrees of loft between irons in most sets. Slower swings tend to see smaller gaps, especially in the long irons.
Should I use carry or total distance?
Carry, for approach shots. The ball has to fly over bunkers and water and land on the green; roll-out changes with firmness, slope and spin.
