Driver Distance and Swing Speed Calculator
Driver carry is roughly 2.1 to 2.4 yards per mph of club speed: at 94 mph, Trackman's average male golfer, that is about 200 to 226 yards. Enter your speed, or your carry to estimate the speed behind it.
Driver distance calculator
How the estimate works
tour-level carry ≈ club speed × 2.4 typical amateur carry ≈ club speed × 2.13
Trackman's tour data gives the upper line: PGA Tour players carry the driver 282 yards at 115 mph (2.45 yards per mph) and LPGA players 223 yards at about the same 94 mph as the average male amateur (2.37). Trackman also notes that average male amateurs, at the same speed as the LPGA average, carry the ball more than 20 yards shorter, because they rarely optimize ball speed, launch and spin. That gap gives the lower line, about 2.13 yards per mph. Total distance adds roll, which depends on how firm the fairways are.
Average driver speed and carry by handicap
| Golfer | Club speed | Estimated carry |
|---|---|---|
| Men, scratch or better | 110 mph | 234 to 264 yd |
| Men, 5 handicap | 101 mph | 215 to 242 yd |
| Men, 10 handicap | 95 mph | 202 to 228 yd |
| Men, average golfer (14.5) | 94 mph | 200 to 226 yd |
| Men, bogey golfer | 92 mph | 196 to 221 yd |
| Women, scratch or better | 90 mph | 192 to 216 yd |
| Women, 5 handicap | 87 mph | 185 to 209 yd |
| Women, 10 handicap | 83 mph | 177 to 199 yd |
| Women, 15 handicap | 79 mph | 168 to 190 yd |
Club speeds are Trackman's amateur averages; the carry column applies the two lines above, so it is an estimate, not measured data.
How to hit it farther
Two routes exist: more speed, or more yards from the speed you have. Center strikes raise ball speed for free, and a higher launch with less spin (teeing the ball higher, hitting slightly up on it) closes much of the gap to the tour line. More speed comes from strength and rotation training over months; our home golf workout is a place to start.
Frequently asked questions
How far should I hit my driver?
It depends mostly on club speed. At Trackman's average male amateur speed of 94 mph, expect roughly 200 to 226 yards of carry: the lower figure for a typical strike, the higher one with tour-level launch and spin.
How many yards per mph of swing speed?
About 2.4 yards of carry per mph of driver speed when launch and spin are optimized (PGA Tour: 282 yards at 115 mph; LPGA: 223 yards at about 94 mph). Typical amateurs get closer to 2.1 yards per mph.
What is the average driver swing speed?
Trackman puts the average male golfer (14.5 handicap) at 94 mph, a scratch golfer at 110 mph, and female amateurs from 79 mph (15 handicap) to 90 mph (scratch).
Why do I hit it shorter than the calculator says?
Off-center strikes cost ball speed, and a low launch or high spin costs carry. A launch-monitor session usually shows which one it is.
