What Is a Good Golf Handicap? Averages and What They Mean

The average Handicap Index in the US is about 14.2 for men and 28.7 for women, according to the USGA's 2024 data, as reported by Golf News Net. So for a man, anything below about 14 is better than average, a single-digit index (9.9 or lower) is very good, and scratch (0.0) or a plus handicap is expert level. For women, an index under about 28 is better than average, and under 15 is strong. Only about 15 percent of American golfers carry an official index at all. This page explains what each range means in strokes on the course. For how the number is calculated, see how to calculate a handicap or the handicap guide.

Handicap ranges and what they mean

The third column is par plus the handicap, which is a good day, not an average one. That is the most misunderstood point about handicaps, and the next section explains why.

Why most rounds are higher than your handicap

Your Handicap Index is the average of your best 8 of your last 20 Score Differentials, not all 20. It measures what you can shoot when you play well. On a normal day most golfers finish a few strokes above par plus their Course Handicap.

In the 20-round example on our calculation page, the golfer's index is 14.8, but the average of all 20 differentials is about 17.5. On a course of standard difficulty that player's typical round is roughly three strokes worse than their handicap suggests. That is normal, and it is by design: the system rewards potential, which keeps matches between players of different abilities fair.

Average handicaps in the US

  • Men: 14.2 in 2024, up from 13.7 in 2021.
  • Women: 28.7 in 2024, up from 27.3 in 2021. Part of the rise comes from many new women golfers starting with a high index and posting 9-hole rounds.
  • Who has one: about 3.35 million Americans carry an index, roughly 2.7 million men and 650,000 women. Men posted an average of 24 rounds in 2024 and women 20.

Keep in mind that golfers with an index tend to play more and be more serious than the average person on a public course, so the typical golfer without an index probably scores higher than these averages suggest.

What is a good handicap for you?

A better question than "is my handicap good" is whether it is moving the right way. A few common milestones:

  • Breaking 100 on a regular basis usually means an index somewhere around the mid 20s.
  • Breaking 90 regularly is roughly a mid-teens index, close to the men's average.
  • Breaking 80 regularly puts you in single digits, a level a minority of golfers with an index reach.

These are rough, because Course Rating and Slope change from course to course. A 90 on a long, difficult course with a Slope of 140 is a better round than a 90 on a short course with a Slope of 110, and your Score Differential reflects that.

The maximum handicap

The highest Handicap Index anyone can have is 54.0, for men and women alike. The limit was raised when the World Handicap System replaced the old USGA system in 2020, so that new golfers can get an index and play in handicap competitions sooner.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 20 handicap good?

It is a little above the US men's average of 14.2 and well below the women's average of 28.7. Most recreational golfers would be pleased with it.

What handicap is a bogey golfer?

A bogey golfer averages about one over par per hole, roughly 90 on a par-72 course. Under the Course Rating System a bogey golfer is defined as a man with an index around 20 or a woman around 24.

What percentage of golfers are single-digit handicaps?

A minority. Because the average man's index is about 14, single-digit players are well into the better half of golfers who keep an official handicap.
